New York, 8 September 2026 – IonQ Italia, the Italian subsidiary of US multinational IonQ, a global leader in quantum technologies, and Lutech, a leading Italian company in digital technologies and artificial intelligence, today announced a strategic collaboration. The aim is to accelerate the industrial adoption of quantum computing, quantum security, quantum networking and quantum sensing in Italy and key European markets. The agreement creates a commercial and industrial platform that combines frontier quantum technologies with integration capabilities, making quantum applicable to the strategic processes of businesses, public administrations and critical infrastructure operators.
The collaboration, with an initial term of 24 months, addresses a decisive phase for the industry: increasingly advanced technologies must translate into effective adoption, widespread expertise and verifiable outcomes. The two companies will work jointly to define roadmaps, select use cases and develop offerings that integrate quantum solutions superior to any classical alternative. The objective is to deliver pilot projects and scalable solutions suitable for production environments in the Italian and European markets.
At the heart of the agreement is the complementary expertise of the two companies. IonQ is a leader in quantum computing, quantum networking, quantum security and quantum sensing. Lutech contributes its knowledge of industrial processes, system integration capabilities and established expertise in artificial intelligence, cloud, cybersecurity, HPC, data engineering, delivery and managed services. This approach is designed to integrate quantum into both existing systems and those under development, creating exceptionally fast, precise, secure and scalable applications—outcomes that cannot be achieved with classical technologies.
“Italy has the expertise, talent and industrial capacity to play a leading role in the European Quantum Renaissance,” said Marco Pistoia, CEO of IonQ Italia. “Our ambition is not simply to bring quantum technologies developed in the United States to Italy, but to build them in Italy together with businesses, research centres and the public administration, creating expertise, intellectual property, applications and industrial value in our country. The collaboration with Lutech combines IonQ’s technological leadership with Lutech’s integration capabilities, market knowledge and local presence, accelerating the transformation of quantum innovation into tangible solutions. Our vision is to make Italy a second major innovation hub for IonQ, creating an Italian-American technology corridor capable of contributing to the development of the next generation of quantum solutions. In this way, Italy will not simply be a user, but a creator of quantum technology.”
“Quantum is entering the phase in which technological availability must become industrial capability and tangible value for organisations,” said Giuseppe Di Franco, CEO of Lutech. “The collaboration with IonQ Italia enables Lutech to support businesses and institutions along a progressive journey, from quantum readiness and experimentation through to large-scale adoption, not only retaining integration expertise, project accountability and execution capabilities in Italy, but also bringing the creation and development of quantum applications to the country.”
For Italy, the agreement represents a model of open technological sovereignty: access to the best global technologies combined with the local ability to select, integrate, secure and govern them. For IonQ and the US ecosystem, Lutech provides a qualified industrial channel to businesses, institutions and critical infrastructure operators in Italy and Europe.
Quantum computing activities will address strategic sectors including financial services and insurance, energy and utilities, telecommunications, manufacturing, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, transport, aerospace and defence, public administration, smart cities and critical infrastructure.
Security is a priority area of the collaboration. IonQ and Lutech intend to support businesses and institutions in assessing their exposure to post-quantum-era risks and planning progressive assessment, migration and security programmes for data, communications and strategic infrastructure. At the same time, quantum sensing can help Italian companies significantly improve their processes through atomic clocks, quantum sensors, gravimeters, magnetometers, GPS-independent navigation and geolocation systems, and medical equipment for advanced, non-invasive diagnostics.
These initiatives will initially focus on Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, with the possibility of expanding into other European and international markets.
